British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
