Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
